General considerations:
Driving 180 km from Mendoza City, following the gorge of the Mendoza River, and later the Cuevas River will leadus to the Ski resort and Village of "Los Penitentes", where our mules and logistics are based at the Ayelen Hotel.
Only 12 km. far from Penitentes is located the Rangers Station of Horcones Valley, where formalities for the Park entrance are necessaries, and the trek to Plaza de Mulas Base Camp will start.
With a distance of 35 km. to Plaza de Mulas Base Camp and a level gain of 1200 Mts, the Horcones Valley offers a 2/3 days approach trek to the botom of Aconcagua's Normal route, Plaza de Mulas.
The campsite is located at the end of the Horcones Superior River Valley, on the West side of the Aconcagua mountain.
This is the starting point for the climb through the Normal or North West Ridge Route. Also is possible from here to climb the Polish Glacier Route by traversing to the North side of the mountain from Nido de Condores at 5400 Mts. a.s.l., or from Berlin Huts at 5850 Mts. a.s.l.
Plaza de Mulas is whith not doubt the most famous base camp of Aconcagua Mountain and one of the biggest and best organised Base Camps among all the mountains visited by the world international climbers community.
During the season, the moraine at the foot of the mountain is transformed in a little “village” with hundreds of colourfull tents, and many different languages are spoken by climbers from all the world, but all of them are united by the same wish of adventure.
Situated at 4230 meters a.s.l., lies the last possible place to be reached by mules; from here you should carry your own pack to start your Aconcagua adventure.
Usually the time spent in this campsite is between 4 to 7 days in total, that’s why we have great facilities there; such electric light inside dinning tents, showers, satellite phone, among others.
The catering we provide is basically made on fresh food and home made. Lots of fresh meat, vegetables, fruit and bread are provided as well as all drinks including some wine to keep a high moral level !!
Plaza Argentina is other Base Camp situated on the East side of the Aconcagua Mountain.
To get there you have an approach of 60 kilometres usually done in 3 days. Leaving the international road to Chile at the Punta de Vacas town, follow the Vacas River Valley to Casa de Piedra place, from there turn left to follow the Relinchos River Valley, at the end of Relinchos is located Plaza Argentina.
While the approaches are usually used two campsites: Pampa de Leñas, a bridge has been put to cross the river, and Casa de Piedra where the Vacas and Relinchos Valleys meet.
Starting point for the climb of the Polish Glacier Route also is possible to connect the climb the Normal Route from there, today know as "Falso Polacos Route".
This side of the mountain offers a more wilderness and less visited option than Plaza de Mulas even when in the last years has become more popular among Aconcagua climbers.
