Driving 180 km from Mendoza City, following the gorge of the Mendoza River, and later the Cuevas River will lead us to the Ski resort and Village of "Los Penitentes", where our logistics are based.
Only 12 km. far from Penitentes is located the Rangers Station of Horcones Valley, where formalities for the Park entrance are necessaries and the trek to Plaza de Mulas Base Camp will start.
With a distance of 35 km. to Plaza de Mulas Base Camp and a level gain of 1200 Mts, the Horcones Valley offers a 2/3 days approach trek to the bottom of Aconcagua's Normal route, Plaza de Mulas.
The campsite is located at the end of the Horcones Superior River Valley, on the West side of the Aconcagua Mountain.
This is the starting point for the climb through the Normal or North West Ridge Route. Also is possible from here to climb the Polish Glacier Route by traversing to the North side of the mountain from Nido de Condores at 5400 Mts. a.s.l, or from Berlin Huts at 5850 Mts. a.s.l.
Plaza de Mulas is with not doubt the most famous base camp of Aconcagua Mountain and one of the biggest and best organized Base Camps among all the mountains visited by the world international climber’s community.
During the season, the moraine at the foot of the mountain is transformed in a little “village” with hundreds of colorful tents, and many different languages are spoken by climbers from all over the world, but all of them are united by the same wish of adventure.
Situated at 4230 meters a.s.l. lays the last possible place to be reached by mules; from here you should carry your own pack to start your Aconcagua adventure.
Usually the time spent in this campsite is between 4 to 7 days in total, that’s why we have great facilities there; such electric light inside dinning tents, showers, satellite phone, among others.
The catering we provide is basically made on fresh food and homemade. Lots of fresh meat, vegetables, fruit and bread are provided as well as all drinks including some wine to keep a high moral level !!!
From Penitentes, were our operations base is located, you have only 8 kms. to Punta de Vacas, where the Vacas Valley trekking starts.
To get Plaza Argentina you have an approach of 60 kilometers usually done in 3 days.
Two campsites are usually done: “Pampa de Leñas”, and “Casa de Piedra” located where the Vacas and Relinchos Valleys meet.
This Base Camp is the starting point for the climb of the Polish Glacier Route but also is possible to connect the climb of the Normal Route from there, and also the known route "Falso de los Polacos Route".
This side of the mountain offers a wilder and less visited option than Plaza de Mulas even when in the last years has become more popular among Aconcagua climbers. Offered services in all campsites:
We really look forward to share a great mountain experience with you !
